Christmas in Liverpool

Christmas in Liverpool market
Christmas in Liverpool ice-skating

Liverpool is such a fantastic place to be during the festive period. There is so much on, and so much to see, so I thought I would write a few of my favourite things to try out this December.

ICE FESTIVAL
The Ice Festival is held in Liverpool ONE every year. There is chance to ice skate on the undercover ice rink along to your favourite Christmas tunes, relax in the Apr├Ęs Bar with a hot chocolate, or try out the UK’s only ice slide for a bit of fun. You can also visit the Ice Bar, which is carved entirely out of ice and has a temperature of minus three degrees, for an ice cold shot or cold festive drink. The Ice Festival also has a few stalls selling various food items, some funfair rides for children, and a huge snow globe which you can have your photo taken inside. See my photos ice skating here.

CHRISTMAS MARKET
There is a small Christmas market in the centre of Liverpool near the shops, with around 30 stalls selling a range of food, from hot dogs to baklava and mulled wine. There are also crafty stalls that sell things like winter hats and home items. If you fancy a trip to a bigger market, travel to Manchester or Birmingham as theirs are much larger. Birmingham has the biggest market in the UK and costs £12 advanced return with a railcard, taking less than 2 hours to get to (see my visit here), whereas you can get to Manchester for around £8 in about 45 minutes.

ST GEORGE'S HALL
Visit St George’s Hall opposite Lime Street station and be greeted by live character performances whilst following a magical festive treasure trail. You will eventually reach a traditional grotto where you can meet Santa and be presented with a Christmas gift – definitely worth a visit with young children.

ALADDIN
If you love Christmas pantomimes, the Empire Theatre is showing Aladdin this year, starring Ray Quinn and Claire Sweeney, throughout December and into January. Fun for all the family with dancing, singing and amazing sets, it’s worth going if you enjoy the atmosphere of the theatre, especially during the festive season.

LIVERPOOL GUILD
If you're a student at the University of Liverpool, the student guild always has plenty on during Christmas time, to get everyone into the festive spirit. This year there are showings of Grease , a Winter Ball, a pub quiz, and Christmas dinner with festive decoration making.

LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL
There are always plenty of events on at the Liverpool Cathedral, and this festive season is no different. From Christmas Carol Concerts to Christmas worship there is plenty of choice for everyone. There are also Christmassy events on at the Metropolitan Cathedral, situated on the university site.

Liverpool is a lovely place to be in December, and I feel like it’s really got everyone in the mood for Christmas.  I am very ready to break up and have a couple of weeks off university, whilst stuffing myself with homemade food. After all, Christmas is just an excuse to eat loads really, isn’t it?

Today has been spent preparing for our house Christmas meal tomorrow and watching festive films - Santa Clause 3 and Love Actually, along with a box of biscuits and some grapes, have made this day perfect.

Worrying will never change the outcome.
