TGIF!

Thank goodness it's Friday!

Today has been a typical Friday for me, spent in hospital on placement, and then napping for a few hours when I got home. I then watched Ted 2 with my housemates, which was really funny.

Tomorrow I am going to another #NWmeet bloggers meet up (read about the past two here and here) which I am really excited about! It will lovely to see some of the girls that I met at the past two events again. Afterwards I'm going to Wales to stay in a cottage with my family for the long weekend. It will be lovely spending time with them and going for long walks in the countryside.

I'm not sure how much internet access I will have while I'm there, so bear with me with blog posts over the weekend!

Shopping, Almost Famous and The Jungle Book

I have had such a lovely afternoon and evening! The girls from my hospital group and I decided to have an evening out tonight to have a break from studying and revision. Myself and Meadhbh met early and hit the shops - we couldn't resist the 20% off Topshop...

When we were all shopped out and getting peckish, we decided to go for tea at Almost Famous, an American-style burger restaurant in the centre of Liverpool. It is a really edgy eating place with graffiti on the walls, and the menu is really unique, offering burgers with almost everything you can think of on them - even strawberry pop tarts. Oh, or fries with popping candy. Y'know, normal...

I went for a Brittany Murphy burger, which had two vegetarian mac and cheese patties, tomatoes, onions, lettuce and sauce - and I have to say I think it is the best veggie burger I have ever had - it even beats NoLIta Cantina, which is a huge statement to make! It was really moist and tasty - I think the mixture of sauces made it even better.

Meadhbh had the River Phoenix beef burger, which contained cheese, bacon, onions, Frazzles (yes, the bacon crisps!), chillies and sauce.

We also shared a basket of the Bacon Bacon fries, which were a mixture of normal potato and sweet potato chips, with bacon mayo and bacon bits on - they were absolutely delicious. Bacon mayo is amazing!

I definitely want to go back to Almost Famous again and sample some more of the menu - especially the different types of chips you can buy.

Once the other two girls joined us, we had a cocktail each. I had the Bitch Juice, which was sweet and sour at the same time, and Meadhbh had the Haribo Smash.


Afterwards we all went to the Picturehouse at FACT to watch the new Jungle Book movie. And oh my gosh, it was AMAZING! It's the best film I've seen in a long time - the graphics were incredible and I loved that some of the original music was reworked to be included in it. The animals in it were so cute as well; I literally came out feeling so good about life. I would definitely 100% recommend a watch!

PS Finding Dory also looks incredible - I can't wait for that to come out over the summer...

Not fair not safe


Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that the junior doctors are on strike today and tomorrow, in protest about the new contracts that will be enforced on them from September. I wrote about why they are striking back in October, which you can read here.

The main reasoning for the protests are that the contracts aren't fair on doctors, and the new NHS will not be as safe for patients. However, what about doctor safety?

A friend on Facebook posted these statistics, and kindly said that I could post them on my blog too:
  • Roughly 1 in 3 doctors have depression at any one time
  • 80% will suffer from a mental health problem during their careers
  • Nearly 50% suffer burnout after only 2 years
  • Life expectancy is 5 years shorter than the rest of the population
  • Doctors are twice as likely to commit suicide, women doctors up to 4 times more likely to kill themselves
  • 1 in 4 doctors who die whilst under GMC investigation committed suicide
  • 2nd most likely profession to fall asleep at the wheel
  • 80% of seniors set to retire early due to stress related illness
This then makes me question whether the new contracts will cause these problems to get even worse. More doctors may suffer with their mental health due to being stressed and over-worked, in a career where there already simply is not enough time to get everything done.

Will a 7 day NHS and longer working hours increase the number of doctors with mental health problems, or even dying due to suicide? I guess we'll just have to wait and see, if these contracts are enforced. Let's hope not, for the patients' and doctors' sake.

How hard is medical school really?


Medicine is always made out to be such a difficult degree, that only those with a high degree of intelligence can pursue. So after nearly 4 years studying medicine and surgery, how hard is it really?

Before I started my degree in 2012 I thought it was going to be horrendously difficult, with hardly any free time. I didn't really know what to expect. However my first year was really laid-back - I was only in university for about 10 hours each week and the work was just an extension of what I studied in Biology at A-level. We learnt the basic sciences and how each part of the body functioned normally, and our exams were based around this. I think I probably had more work to do than my flatmates that weren't studying medicine, but it was definitely reasonable and I had plenty of free time.

Things changed in my second year, when we started to learn about disease and what happens when processes in the body go wrong. I think second year was the hardest for me as it was such a big step up, and I was really suffering with my depression at the time. There seemed like a huge amount of things to learn, and it was things I had never learnt about before. I was in hospital twice a week and then seemed to spend the rest of my time studying - but I think I probably learnt much more than I needed to to pass exams.

In third year we continued to learn about diseases, but this time also focused on psychiatry, paediatrics, and obstetrics and gynaecology. There was much less new things to learn, although the volume of work was still high, and we were in hospital four days each week. I seemed to have a much better balance between studying and my free time last year though, and enjoyed my third year a lot more than the previous academic year.

This year, my fourth year, has been fairly relaxed for me. The only new things we have really needed to learn have been palliative care and oncology, as well as expanding on the knowledge that we have from the previous three years. My final exams are in about 6 weeks time, but I am approaching them completely differently to how I was in second year - I am much more relaxed and am giving myself enough free time so that I don't burn out by studying too much. I have actually really enjoyed this year, especially the heightened responsibility that we have and being in hospital four days a week.

I don't know whether I have got used to the volume of work, or if my second year was just especially difficult, but I have found myself enjoying each year more and more. I think the hardest part of medicine is probably the sheer amount of knowledge you have to have, but the actual diseases and body processes aren't actually that difficult to get your head around. We are also in university/hospital placement much more often than other degrees, and often have much shorter holidays, but at least we are getting the most out of our £9000!


I also think it's really important to realise that you can have a life outside of medicine - you can go out with your friends, go on holiday, and just take time out to watch Netflix. I think I've learnt that as the years have gone by, and I now have a much better work-life balance. A junior doctor once told me this when I was in my second year - she said to enjoy my time at medical school and spend it relaxing - but I didn't believe her as that year was so stressful. However now I know that she was completely right.

Medicine isn't that hard if you're prepared to work hard and aren't afraid of early mornings (I still haven't quite conquered that bit yet...), and if you have a passion for learning about the human body and getting to know people, then you're halfway there. A good memory also helps too! The hardest part is not letting it take over your life completely, but I think you gradually learn how to have a good work-life balance during the 5 long years at university. It's such a rewarding career and I'm looking forward to what the future brings - hard work or not!
Just because the past didn't turn out like you wanted it to, doesn't mean your future can't be better than you've ever imagined.

The rest of the day has mainly been spent sleeping and eating - standard weekend for me. I hope you have all had a lovely Sunday!

Lazy Saturday


Today has been such a lazy Saturday - I have spent the majority of it in bed.

I went out for a curry and a few drinks with friends last night, so had a long lie in this morning, which I really needed after last weekend's lectures. Then I lazed around with my family, before Dad cooked us a meal. These stuffed peppers as a starter were delicious!

I love the weekend purely for the reason that I can usually sleep as much as I like. This weekend will be a fairly uneventful one, but that is just what I need after a long week at uni.

One thing that will instantly make you feel better about your life #1

I want to start a new series of posts, where I write about one thing that should instantly make you feel better about your life right now. Because, sometimes, life is just ridiculous. And we all need to have a laugh at it once in a while. So here is my first thing that will make you feel better about your life...


Pax the Poopin' Pup

I saw this poopin' pup advertised on TV, and it instantly made me laugh. I mean, why do you need a toy puppy that poops?!

LET'S GET YOUR POOP ON, PAX! It's cute poop, to the max...

Erm... When I was a kid, if I wanted to clean up poo I could just go into the nearest field. I just find it strange that any child would want to clean up after a poopin' dog, if I'm honest. Plus you also have to feed the dog its own poo, so that it can come out the other end... Slightly strange.

Anyway, Pax made me feel a little better about life, and made me chuckle for a while. Sometimes the smallest thing makes you realise that life is fun, and doesn't have to be taken too seriously all the time. And y'know, if you're partial to pooping toys and want to go out and buy Pax, then I won't be judging you.

PS That fart in the video will never get old...
Sometimes what you're looking for comes when you're not looking at all.

An evening walk in Sefton Park


This evening my housemates and I spontaneously decided to go for a walk in Sefton Park, a large park in Liverpool. It has been such a lovely warm day so it was really relaxing to go for an hour's walk together and catch up on our days, whilst watching the sun go down.

Light exercise is so important for mental health, and we all came back feeling much more energised and happy.

The rest of my day was spent in hospital as normal - I'm so glad it's Thursday tomorrow and nearly the weekend!
It doesn't matter who hurt you, or broke you down, what matter is who made you smile again.

23 things you should remember when you're feeling depressed


1) Depression is an illness; an imbalance of hormones in your brain. It is not a reflection of you.

2) You are not a burden on your friends and family.

3) Depression does not mean you should hurt yourself. Your body deserves more respect than that.

4) You are not alone - a lot of people out there feel the same way that you do.

5) You will come out the other side eventually.

6) You will smile, and laugh, and be happy again. So much happiness if waiting for you.

7) Depression is not your fault, and is not a cry for help.

8) Depression does not mean that you are rubbish at everything, but it does mean that you may struggle to enjoy the things you usually love.

9) Depression does not mean people are lying to you about their feelings, thoughts or ideas.

10) But it does mean that your own thoughts may be lying to you.

11) People spend time with you because they want to, not because they feel obliged to.

12) Sleep is important. Sleep as much as you need to.

13) You may not be able to see a future for yourself right now, but remember that there is one, and that means that there is a potential for everything to get better.

14) Depression doesn't give you an excuse to lash out or push people away.

15) Remember to take time out to do small things that may make you feel better, if only slightly. Reading, taking a long bath, listening to music, watching YouTube - these things don't necessarily have to take much effort.

16) Let the people around you know how you feel. Talking is one of the best therapies.

17) Depression doesn't make you weak - in fact it will make you stronger.

18) You may feel numb, sad, angry, hopeless... Depression is a combination of feelings.

19) Taking anti-depressants doesn't mean you are weak - it shows that you are strong enough to try to overcome your illness.

20) Food is important - you need to eat, but depression also isn't an excuse to eat too much.

21) It's okay to cry.

22) You need to spend time looking after yourself.

23) And at all times, remember that people love you and want you to get better.

Today is my housemate's birthday, so we went to the Four Seasons restaurant for dinner to celebrate. Four Seasons is situated at the top of Renshaw Street near the bombed out church, and is a Chinese restaurant and take away with an extensive menu of meat, vegetable and fish dishes.


If you arrive before 7.30pm, they have a 'happy hour' menu that is £11.90 for a group of starters and a main. I decided on the starters that included vegetable spring rolls, mushroom dumplings, and fried seaweed. There was loads of food!


For my main I ordered sweet and sour giant king prawns with egg fried rice. It was really tasty and very filling - the egg fried rice on its own was delicious too.

We of course had to have birthday cake for pudding, and the staff were nice enough to bring it out whilst singing happy birthday.


I am not usually a massive fan of Chinese food, but I would definitely go back to Four Seasons again. There was a huge choice of dishes that would suit most people, and all of it was delicious, with plenty of food.

The rest of my day has been spent in hospital. I had a really productive day spent in teaching on the ward, and really felt like I achieved something today, which is always great motivation as a medical student when you feel like you make a difference :)

Napping

This morning I went to my revision lectures again, and then I got home and napped for 5 hours. It was glorious. I don't really have much more to say than I hope you had a great Sunday!

Lectures on a Saturday?!


Yes, you read the title right... I had lectures all day today from 9am until 5pm. This weekend is one of our 3 revision weekends before our exams, and although it should be illegal to get up on a Saturday before 11am, I was glad I went along as the teaching was really good.

Plus we got free pizza at lunchtime, which is always a bonus. Pizza Hut delivered 100 pizzas to our lecture theatre - just look at all of those boxes!

I also got a Starbucks hot chocolate, possibly because I wanted to get one of their pretty cups... And I will unashamedly admit that I asked for one of the flowery cups instead of a plain one (the lady behind the counter gave me a very strange look).


I have some more lectures tomorrow until 5pm, so it won't really feel like I've had much of a weekend, but I have been relaxing tonight and watching Britain's Got Talent. Plus I had my first ice lolly of the year this evening!
